PROFILE OF THE MONTH
Daril Atkins: Art & soul
This month we are humbled by an unusual sculptor, who customizes his creativity, to fulfill a special need.

Daril Atkins
Medical Sculptor,
Sharjah, UAE.

My job profile:
My job consists of designing and fabricating life like replicas of the external human anatomy, custom built for individuals who have suffered a loss, or have an absence from birth of the respective body part. The product is meant to camouflage the defect, thus enabling the psychosocial rehabilitation of the affected individua
l.

My favorite color:
My favorite color is green, being the center of the rainbow, going out on either side of the spectrum to blues and yellows, and reds. It's the most dominant color in nature, acting as a background for all the other colors. Its relaxing and is also a sign of fertility. Its shades from the new leaf to the dying leaf, with shades of rust, beige, and coppers always fascinate me.

My favorite holiday destination:
Melbourne. I just love that city.

My idea of spending free time:
I am usually writing a long story. Quite often, I write verse, some of which can be seen at poetry.com. But my favorite spare time pursuit is virtual reality.

My favorite websites:
My favorite website is Cybertown.com, where I was a citizen for a long time. With a browser like Blaxun 3D one can navigate the virtual spaces which are fantastic in design. Then, that led me to Spazz 3D to design my own objects. The subject fascinates me, because its potential is vast and we are yet on the threshold.

My favorite cartoon characters:
I don’t have a favorite, but liked all of Disney’s characters.

My favorite artists and people who inspire me:
During University, I was to a large extent influenced by Shanko Chowdry the well-known Indian Sculptor, for his genius and stamina. Then there was Dr. M. H. Keswani, the Plastic Surgeon and Burns specialist, also my first boss. His creativity and artistic surgery inspired me. Later after my first exhibition of Modern creative objects, I met Nari Ghandi, the sought after architect, again, a very creative personality. Then there was Homi Sethna and his wife Nelli, both established artists, who acted as my mentors. Finally, there was Jagdish Shivpuri, a professor of English and and also a poet. We enjoyed each other’s company, just talking metaphysics.

My type of music:

Many years ago, Pink Floyd, Isaac Hayes and Gilbert O’Sullivan were my favorites. Presently, I enjoy experimental music, such as Denis Hanes among others.

Some useful tips:
Your most precious possession is your mind. You can choose to keep it totally silent when communicating with the Universal mind, for peace and inspiration. Your imagination is under your control. You can use it or if you lose its control, it can drive you crazy. As artists, our creativity ends at the limits we set on it.

My ambitions for the future:
Next year I retire at the age of sixty. Thereafter, I hope to transfer all my knowledge to a Project in India, which is yet being negotiated. Therafter, I hope to devote my time to developing the potentials of Virtual Reality in my capacity as a creative person.

M
y message to the art community:
The art community seems to be like the elephant with the weak rope tied to its foot. Throughout the centuries, artists have been experimenters with mediums. The mediums offered today have potential for creative people because applications are desperately sought. Artists are also futurists, as we usher in the future. Lets think about how we can use the medium of today in original ways for pure pleasure and for the good of society.
