PROFILE OF THE MONTH
Amruta Patil: Visual narrative
This month we explore the art and thoughts of an ambitious graduate in Boston, who’s making gains in the world of sequential art, while she completes her MFA.

Amruta Patil
Graduate Student,
School of the Museum of Fine Art,
Boston, USA.

My job profile:
I have been working with text and image, exploring different ways to make them work together. I am currently working on a novel based in Goa and a graphic novel based on the Mahabharat. Also in the pipeline is a comic book featuring
Kari, Suburban Superhero, guardian of Mummies and Medieval Madonnas.
I am a big, big fan of sequential/comic book art. Sequential art can tell stories of the most unexpected depth and seriousness.
Sequential art is the link between the written and the seen. Comics are like movies in freeze frame. They are the movies that comic book artists saw in their heads, but did not make.

My favourite color:
White (on me) and Red (on things around me).

My favourite holiday destination:
Lakshadweep, Havelock Island and McLeodganj. Going back home to Goa is always welcome too.

My idea of spending free time:
Most of my worthwhile work happens in 'spare time'. Outside of spare time, I swim, walk, read or cook.

My favourite websites:
www.indianexpress.com and www.timesofindia.com: when you live away from your country, these things are like a daily shot of nostalgia. I read every obituary and silly letters to the editor on www.navhindtimes.com too.
www.prophecymagazine.com/who_we_are.php: there is some hope for people doing my kind of work!

My favourite cartoon characters:
Bucky from 'Get Fuzzy' by Darby Conley. Wyle E.Coyote and (Beep
Beep) the Roadrunner. Of the superheroes. I like Batman for the
Gotham city he gets to live in. There was a comic strip Target
magazine,'Gardhab Das', that used to crack me up too.

My favourite artists and people who inspire me:
My artistic influence include Rajasthani Miniatures and Japanese
Ink drawings. The comic book work of Joe Sacco, Cris Ware, Dave
Mc'Kean. The paintings of Gustav Klimt and Georgia O'Keefe. The
writings of Iravati Karve, Durga Bhagwat, John Kennedy Toole, J D
Salinger, John Steinbeck, Jeanette Winterson.

My type of music:

Bhimsen Joshi, Abida Parveen, Ustad Sultan Khan. On a different
front, K.D. Lang, Bjork, Bob Marley, The Doors.

Some useful tips:
Pay attention to the world outside of ad agencies and art galleries. Read all you can. Visit museums and read history. Not just art history. Don't be snobbish about learning about your own country and heritage. The loss will be yours.

My ambitions for the future:
To tell stories of unexpected depth without shortchanging either
the artwork or the quality of writing. To be part of the steady
rise of the sequential art movement. It is a medium whose
potential is seriously underutilised, and whose time has come.

My message to the art community:
Try to keep your head above water. Use hostility with caution, or preferably, not at all.
