PROFILE OF THE MONTH
Iryne Cummins: Coming of age

This month we profile a Creative-double in Florida, who helps fly spaceships for a living and indulges in pixels with her extra-hours, to create digital art.

Iryne Cummins
Day Job – Creative Director.
Real Life – Digital Artist/Evangelist
Merritt Island, Florida - USA.

My job profile:
Day Job: I manage a 100,000 page web site for the main contractor on the Space Shuttle Program. Besides the thrill of helping to fly spaceships for a living, I do get to do a fair

amount of design work for special project web sites for the company. In addition, I am the webmaster for the local art museum – a task that is a lot of fun, but keeps me hopping.

Real Life: I do digital art (period). Despite classical training in all the traditional mediums, I basically consider the computer my palette and pixels my medium. I am a digital evangelist because I feel that most people don't understand what digital art is. Most think that I set up the computer, walk away, and the machine makes all the creative decisions for me. Because many people think this is the way digital art is created, they feel there is no real value in the product. I want to make wonderful things that jar people into realizing that when technology is used for truth and beauty, it can take art to a whole level.

My favourite color:
Gee, I never met a color I didn't like.........

My favourite holiday destination:
Now this is hard – I have Miami and the Keys to the South and New York City to the North. I guess it depends on whether I want to kick back or see a Broadway show. I do have to say that going to the Art Student's League in New York City was a pilgrimage for me.

My idea of spending free time:
Filling my life with as much beauty and inspiration as possible. Doesn't matter if I'm working on a digital print, creating wearable art, or reading inspirational art – they all are very important to me. I just got a new digital camera – a GOOD one, so I'm going to be working on my photography skills.

My favourite websites:
I like Photoshop User because I'm a heavy Photoshop user and the tips and the like are great.
I live at both Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com because I'm such an avid reader.
I love creativetime.com – just for the wonderful art projects that they have going, and of course artyears.com – the resources there are incredible.

My favourite cartoon character:
Road Runner and Coyote – I've seen those cartoons a zillion times, but I'm still rolling on the floor every time I watch them.

My favourite artists and people who inspire me:
Claude Monet, Georgia O'Keeffe, Dale Chihuly, and Louise Nevelson

My type of music:
I love classical. Big fan of Bach.

Some useful tips:
Never, never give up on a creative career. The job I have didn't exist 10 years ago. The medium I use today didn't exist 25 years ago. Despite the sorrow in the world, we live in a marvelous time.

My ambitions for the future:
I want to be able to do digital illustration full time. I want to make Internet installations that spread peace to the entire planet.

My message to the art community:
Art saves lives – it really does. From inner city at risk kids, to bringing diverse cultures together, art can make the difference.
With the Internet, we have the ability like never before to share our art, our hearts, and our minds. Again, what a wonderful thing!!!
